VR AR in Gaming

The buzz surrounding VR and AR in gaming communities is strong and for good reasons. It is safe to say that VR and AR is all set to revolutionize the future of gaming.

Gamers  got a preview of what Augmented and Virtual Reality could do for immersive gameplay with popular games like EVE: Valkyrie and Raw Data. Facebook made a significant investment in the future of gaming with the purchase of Oculus in 2014 and Oculus Rift and Pokemon Go shed much light on the viability of AR and VR in the gaming sphere. However, the history of AR and VR goes further back.

VR Started with Morton Heilig in the 1950’s

It all started with the Telisphere Mask invented by Morton Heilig in the 1950’s. This head mounted VR display device promised and delivered stereo sound and stereoscopic 3D.

According to the patent filing of this device; “The spectator is given a complete sensation of reality, i.e. moving three dimensional images which may be in color, with 100% peripheral vision, binaural sound, scents and air breezes,”.

VR Today

A copy of the patent drawings of the Telisphere Mask brings up uncanny similarities with the Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift is advanced to a greater degree with the ability to track hand and head motions.  In fact, VR has advanced even further, even eye movements are tracked to facilitate an immersive gaming experience by the HTC Vive Pro Eye head mounted VR device.

1992 – The Birth of AR

The term AR or Augmented Reality was coined in 1992 by Thomas Claudell and David Mizell. These Boeing researchers aimed to make plane manufacturing easier with the help of an AR headset and AR took off from there.

AR found its way into gaming owing to research by South Korean scientists in 1997, who hoped to event a handheld AR gaming device.

Today both AR and VR are promising components of futuristic gameplay. Oculus Rift and Google Glass truly paved the way for AR and VR to make a reasonable impression on gaming communities worldwide. Gamers now are waiting for even more AR and VR magic and it’s safe to say that there is much in store for them.
